Member Benefits

Southern California Grantmakers (SCG) members share ideas, learn about other grantmaking methods, discover new programs and priorities, while developing valuable relationships with their grantmaking peers. With such a wide diversity of members, SCG cross-pollinates exciting funding partnerships and sparks collaboration within the local giving community.

Membership is open to individual givers and institutional grantmakers that give at least $25,000 annually in SCG’s service area. Learn more about how to join SCG on our Becoming a Member page.

Four Key Types of Benefits

Connection to the local philanthropic community, with opportunities to meet and learn from your peers.

SCG’s Annual Conference and Members' Meeting brings together the membership to hear nationally-recognized philanthropic leaders and thinkers, such as economist and writer Robert Reich, and to increase professional skills or deepen understanding of a particular issue, such as homelessness, in education sessions.

A full spectrum of skills-building opportunities, to help you become a better, more thoughtful, more effective grantmaker.

Fundamentals of Effective Grantmaking is an opportunity for new grantmakers to learn from seasoned professionals and network with peers, forming a solid professional foundation of concepts, tools and relationships that last well after the four-session course.

Knowledge specific to your challenges and environment is a key part of SCG’s membership offerings, along with resources and savings on tools to make your job easier.

Members receive News from SCG, a biweekly e-newsletter of information about philanthropy, and have access to a resource-laden members-only section of www.socalgrantmakers.org. Also available is a complimentary subscription to Family Philanthropy Online, as well as savings on essential services for grantmakers, such as grants management software.

By monitoring public policy and working with the media, SCG is a visible and knowledgeable public face and voice for local philanthropic concerns.

SCG educates local media and policymakers to advocate for the philanthropic community. In 2008, SCG worked with the State Assembly and the other California regional associations on Assembly Bill 624, which deals with the issue of private foundations’ funding of minority-led nonprofit organizations, and the extent of minority representation within foundations.
