Senior Peer-to-Peer Network

“The Peer-to-Peer Network was an exceptional and rewarding experience. It was a mini-retreat, both invigorating and refreshing.”

Mindy Jones
Program Officer at The Ahmanson Foundation

“The Peer-to-Peer Network provided the unique opportunity to come together with senior colleagues in philanthropy and, in the process of exploring workplace issues and challenges, develop new friendships and a valued professional support group.”

Jeff Schaeffer
Former Senior Program Officer at
The Conrad N. Hilton Foundation

Southern California Grantmakers (SCG) has launched a second round of the Senior Peer-to-Peer Network. The Network is a select group of senior program staff from SCG member organizations. The group meets quarterly to discuss topics related to leadership development, trends in philanthropy, organizational dynamics, professional development and collaboration.

Background

The Senior Peer-to-Peer Network was launched in 2005 to bring together a small group of select senior program staff and provide opportunities for professional development and peer learning. Conceived by the Management Committee of SCG, the inaugural round was facilitated by Jim Canales and included program officers and senior program officers from a range of member foundations, including the Ahmanson, Archstone, W.M. Keck, Conrad N. Hilton and Ralph M. Parsons Foundations, and the J. Paul Getty Trust.

Goals

  • To establish a peer learning network among senior program leaders of SCG members;
  • To create a forum for mutual learning and sharing of best practices about philanthropic work;
  • To build new relationships among a set of colleagues who are engaged in similar work across the philanthropic community in Southern California;
  • To re-energize and re-invigorate experienced program leaders for their continued and active engagement in the philanthropic sector.

Details

The group will be facilitated by Joan Weinstein, Associate Director of the Getty Foundation, who was a participant in the initial group and was widely commended by fellow participants as an excellent facilitator and strategic thinker.

The cost of participating in this program is $500 annually (with the expectation that this program would run over the course of two years).

Participants

The ideal number of participants is 10 – 12 senior program staff who are able to attend every session. Participants should have:

  • Significant experience as a senior-level leader in program/grantmaking activities;
  • More than three years in a senior leadership role in a foundation or across various foundations;
  • Demonstrated willingness to engage in a peer network setting, with an expressed interest in learning and   sharing openly; and
  • The full support of his/her organization’s leadership.

James E. Canales Leadership Fund

Participants in the pilot program were so impressed with the skillful and supportive facilitation of Jim Canales that they have established a fund in his name at SCG. The Fund will ensure the continuation of the program.

Funders include:
