Programs & Events

By facilitating opportunities to learn and connect, Southern California Grantmakers supports the professional growth of its members and fosters connections among grantmakers and between grantmakers and their peers in the nonprofit, public and private sectors. SCG provides a broad range of programs and services to its membership.


Speakers' Series: An opportunity to meet and learn from influential thinkers and leaders in philanthropy. Guest speakers present cutting-edge thinking of interest to sector-specific members as well as the broader membership. Recent speakers include Dr. Emmett Carson, President and CEO of the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, and Kathleen Enright, Executive Director of Grantmakers for Effective Organizations.

Professional Development Series: A continuum of professional development opportunities for foundation staff. Recent series include:

  • The Fundamentals of Effective Grantmaking: a multi-session program introducing new foundation staff to core grantmaking competencies
  • Grantmaking 2.0: a multi-session skills-building program for mid-level to senior-level program officers on financials, leadership and communication
  • Advanced Financial Analysis: a hands-on workshop to help foundation staff navigate and interpret nonprofit financial statements

Public Policy Platform: These sessions offer timely and responsive information to help navigate the quickly changing policy landscape, and to explore short term and long term action steps, anticipated challenges and potential funding and partnership opportunities.

Family Foundation Forums: Intimate conversations with key thought leaders in the world of family philanthropy. Forums are open to both trustees and staff, and encourage vibrant, interactive discussion and illuminate issues unique to family philanthropy. Sessions address topics such as working with a professional advisor, finance and administration and perpetuity.

Corporate Dialogues: These sessions provide corporate funders the opportunity to develop their skills, interact with key thought leaders around issues specific to corporate philanthropy and network with their peers to further their individual philanthropic work, as well as strengthen the corporate philanthropic community in Southern California. Recent sessions include skills-based volunteerism, pro bono service and employee engagement.

Foundation Leadership Series: Designed for senior leadership within the region’s philanthropic community to network and connect with each other. The program series provides a forum for senior leadership to learn about policy developments, trends affecting their work and best practice in the field.

nGen: A new program series focused on strengthening the skills, professional networks and knowledge of next generation grantmakers and donors.
