Fundamentals of Effective Grantmaking

SCG Professional Development Series

To keep pace with the rapid changes in the nonprofit sector and the vast demands on philanthropic resources, grantmakers constantly need new and better tools to understand and proactively address issues at local, state and federal levels.

To that end, SCG’s signature Fundamentals of Effective Grantmaking program is continually evolving to meet the needs of members, the environment in which they practice and the people they serve.

The interactive, three-day series introduces new foundation staff to core grantmaking skills and procedures and provides opportunities to interact with new and veteran members of our grantmaking community. Session topics include:

• Foundations as Public Service Institutions: Overview and Context
• Doing Your Homework: The Process of Assessing Proposals
• Evaluation
• The Numbers Tell a Story: Understanding Financial Statements
• On the Road Again: Site Visits - The Basics
• Do the Right Thing: Ethics in Grantmaking
• See Yourself as Others See You: Some Viewpoints from the Nonprofit Community

In addition to three full-day sessions on September 13, September 29 and October 13, participants will visit a grantmaking organization to observe how Fundamentals lessons operate in the workplace. Individuals who attend the full program will receive a certificate signifying completion of the series.

Dates and Times: (participants must attend all three sessions):

• Monday, September 13, 2010 - 8:45 am to 3:00 pm 
• Wednesday, September 29, 2010 - 8:45 am to 3:00 pm
• Wednesday, October 13, 2010 - 8:45 am to 3:00 pm

Lunch will be served at 12:00 noon.
The program begins promptly at 9:00 am.

Week of October 4: Visit with a Grantmaker

Who May Attend:
Current SCG members and other grantmakers eligible for SCG membership. Click here for eligibility requirements.

Fees:
$300 for SCG members; $450 for other eligible grantmakers. A special rate of $275 per participant will be offered for members sending three or more participants. Fees cover all course materials, lunches and refreshments. Payment must be made in advance by check or Visa/Mastercard.
