As wealth continues to transfer from one generation to another, younger generations need to become more actively involved in their family's foundation—sitting at the table with their parents and grandparents. Family foundations are no longer their "father's foundation" but are increasingly shifting to multi-generational leadership approaches.

Join Valley Nonprofit Resources in partnership with Southern California Grantmakers, for a workshop about how San Fernando Valley family foundations can address multi-generational leadership challenges, support each other, and what resources they can access from local, regional and national sources. This program will feature a conversation with two change makers, Shirley Fredricks, Vice President, The Lawrence Welk Family Foundation, and Jan Kern, Senior Philanthropy Advisor at Southern California Grantmakers. Dr. Thomas Backer, Executive Director of Valley Nonprofit Resources will moderate what is sure to be a robust conversation.

Shirley Fredricks and her family, have been pioneers in structuring and growing multigenerational leadership—including grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jan Kern has been a leader in bringing together family foundations to share with and help each other with the challenges of leadership and operations, through the Family Foundation Information Exchange (FFIX) groups, based at Southern California Grantmakers. Dr. Backer, has studied philanthropy (including a year-long study of FFIX commissioned by the Annie E. Casey Foundation) for more than 30 years.
