Healing is a critical aspect of the movement against criminalization, prisons, and policing and yet, it is rarely prioritized within funding. Without a healing justice framework, we are more likely to reinforce and replicate the oppressive systems we are fighting against. In part two of the CCJFG 2020 Funder Education Series, we will explore healing justice as a framework and practice within organizing and philanthropy. We will gain an analysis of criminalization, oppression, trauma and the need for a systemic view of healing. We will learn how to respond to trauma with collective practices that promote resilience, wellness, and safety and build the foundation for strong movements and organizations. This session will include a facilitated conversation amongst our speakers and an opportunity for funders to reflect and discuss how our funding practices would change if we center culturally relevant healing modalities.

  • Dr. Shawn Ginwright, Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Flourish Agenda
  • Prentis Hemphill, Co-Founder and Co-Director, Resilient Strategies
  • Nicole Lee, Executive Director, Urban Peace Movement
  • Joy Messinger, Program Officer, Third Wave Fund

The California Criminal Justice Funders Group's 2020 Funder Education Series is designed to deepen understanding and engagement of terms commonly heard within the criminal justice field. Our goal is to support funders in aligning themselves with the principles, strategies, and vision of movements and communities fighting against prisons and criminalization, and for the liberation and dignity of system-impacted communities and all people.

Movement leaders from various organizations throughout the state will lead each session and will utilize an intersectional framework in which to discuss topics through multiple lenses. The series will be accessible online and in person and open to all CCJFG members.

Future Session:

Grassroots Organizing 101 (July 2020, date TBD): An exploration of grassroots organizing designed to give funders an understanding of what it takes to build community power, develop effective strategies and tactics, and win campaigns while resisting cooptation.

Past Session:

Prison Industrial Complex Abolition: A conversation amongst funders and organizers about abolition as a vision and practice for creating lasting and liberatory alternatives to criminalization, punishment, and imprisonment. You can watch this webinar here
