This invitation-only CEO salon with philanthropic leaders was hosted by Southern California Grantmakers and Ron Burkle, held in partnership with the UCLA Burkle Global Impact Initiative. We were joined by special guest Peter Sellars, celebrated cultural icon and recipient of the 2014 Polar Music Prize.

We celebrated Peter and his innovative body of work—and his ability to universally engage audiences and illuminate contemporary social and political issues. A champion of the robust role of the arts as a convener around challenging topics like immigration and prison reform, Peter works toward relocating the public in public education and finding the bridge between universities and the universe through his Boethius Initiative, an interdisciplinary experiment in public problem solving housed at UCLA.

Renowned for his groundbreaking interpretations of artistic masterpieces and collaborative projects with an extraordinary range of artists and communities, Peter has staged operas around the world to critical acclaim, establishing a reputation for bringing 20th century and contemporary pieces to the stage. He is known internationally for spearheading the 1990 and 1993 Los Angeles Festivals—groundbreaking events focused on the countries of the Pacific Rim, Middle East, and Africa, and reflecting the cultures of the many people living in the Los Angeles area who come from these regions. Peter has been a professor in the Department of World Arts and Cultures at UCLA for over 20 years and is currently Resident Curator of the Telluride Film Festival.
