A small group of SCG leaders joined an invitation-only CEO salon at the home of Ron Burkle, featuring special guest Ramon Cortines, Superintendent of Los Angeles Unified School District.

Superintendent Cortines spoke candidly about his vision and priorities for the district, as well as his views on issues such as parental choice, nonprofit partners, and charter schools. He welcomed hard-hitting questions about the state of LAUSD and how philanthropy can help improve educational outcomes for all students.

Mr. Cortines was named Superintendent of LAUSD for the third time in 2014. A veteran educator known for his ability to find common ground, he was called out of retirement to lead the nation's second-largest school system through troubled times. In his previous stint as Superintendent from 2009-2011, he contended with the worst budget crisis in decades caused by declining enrollment and the economic recession. Prior to joining LAUSD, he served as LA's Deputy Mayor for Education, Youth and Families and chaired Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa’s Partnership for Los Angeles Schools. After starting his career in the classroom, he became superintendent of districts in Pasadena, San Francisco, San Jose, and New York. Mr. Cortines was also nominated to serve as Assistant Secretary of Education for Intergovernmental Affairs for the Clinton administration.
