We know that children are less likely to succeed academically if they attend school deprived of sleep, hungry, sick, or emotionally exhausted. To counter this, community schools offer an integrated, holistic approach in which nonprofits, businesses, and public agencies work in partnership with public schools.

Join us for the second program of our In Focus: Education series, jointly presented by the Education Funders Group and SCG.

During this conversation, we’ll hear from a panel of education experts and local school site coordinators who will share their perspectives:

  • Tomas Licea, Communities In Schools of Los Angeles (@CISLosAngeles), Site Coordinator Mendez High School
  • Shelly Masur (@skmasur), CEO, Californians Dedicated to Education Foundation (@CDEFoundation)
  • Ellen Pais, President & CEO, Los Angeles Education Partnership (@PartnerwithLAEP)
  • Angelica Romero, Community School Coordinator, Santa Monica Boulevard Community Charter School, Los Angeles Promise Neighborhood, Youth Policy Institute (@YPIUSA)

Many funders are already supporting nonprofits that provide students and their families with educational resources, youth development opportunities, and health and social services. Community schools offer new ways of networking and collaborating that can magnify our individual efforts to improve the academic success and well-being of students.

About the In Focus: Education Series

This series convenes funders to learn about specific education topics, exchange ideas about how philanthropy can address emerging issues, and share updates about our work. Bringing together funders with an interest in education on a quarterly basis over the course of one year provides a platform to gain a deeper understanding of key issues, enhance our grantmaking, and explore opportunities for collaboration and action.
