Over the past year, many of us have hit a “pandemic wall” characterized by Zoom fatigue, a lack of motivation, and burnout. Unfortunately, these strains to our physical and mental health are likely to persist even as we resume our lives after the pandemic. To build our personal resilience, we will have to reckon with emotional stressors, break unhelpful cycles, and create space to prioritize our wellness.

SCG is proud to present our evolving Conversation Series, where progress-centered conversations meet tomorrow’s leaders. To kick off our series, we are excited to partner with Emerging Practitioners in Philanthropy (EPIP-LA), to host therapist and mental wellness advocate Jor-El Caraballo, LMHC & Co-founder of Viva Wellness, and Omar Brownson, Co-founder & CEO of gthx. Together, Omar and Jor-El will recount their journeys as mental health advocates, unpack the oversaturated concept of self-care, discuss personal and professional boundaries, and explore how we can incorporate wellness into our daily lives.

The evolving Conversation Series is part of evolve, SCG's suite of programming championing transformational leadership.

Omar Brownson

Co-Founder and CEO, gthx

Omar makes good visible. He is a catalyst, entrepreneur, speaker and leader. He is the co-founder and CEO of gthx (as in "give thanks") which launched a top-rated gratitude app and now co-hosts Gratitude Circles for leaders across sectors.

Previously, Omar was the founding executive director of RiverLA and has held leadership positions across finance, green infrastructure, sustainability, and social impact. Wherever he is, however, Omar makes sure to take a beat to notice good and to share joy.

Omar was trained in both Circles of Trust by Leading from Within and Healing Circles by Commonweal. He received his master’s in design and public policy at the Harvard Kennedy School and Graduate School of Design. He was a Stanton Fellow, Coro Fellow and selected Graduate of the Year by Southern California Leadership Network. He serves on the boards of InsightLA and Kiss the Ground.

Jor-El Caraballo, LMHC

Co-Founder of Viva Wellness

Jor-El Caraballo is a southern bred, NYC made mental health professional who brings a comfortable approach to his work with clients. He spent his undergraduate years at the University of North Carolina Wilmington where he studied psychology. After college, he traveled across the United States delivering sexual assault prevention education programs to colleges and military bases to help empower men to prevent sexual assault and be effective bystanders. He then attended Columbia University where he received a master’s degrees (M.A., Ed.M) in Psychological Counseling.

Jor-El believes that true wellness is about taking care of the person as a whole. He has experience working with clients on racial/cultural issues, LGBTQ+ concerns, and mindfulness. When he’s not meeting with clients, you’ll probably find him on the hunt for his next spicy meal, strolling through the city with his pup, Nomi, and visiting the movies for stress relief.
