Join Southern California Grantmakers on for a funder learning tour to California State Prison Lancaster, the only maximum security prison in LA County to collaborate with the highly regarded Insight Garden Program (IGP). Attendees will sit in the circle with men at CSP Lancaster to observe the program in action and to have a dialogue about the impact of transformative prisons programs from the perspective of incarcerated participants.

Founded in 2001 at San Quentin Prison, IGP is now active in seven prisons in CA and two yards at CSP Lancaster. Through an experiential 48 week curriculum, IGP re-connects participants to nature, self, and community. At CSP Lancaster, the men recently co-designed and installed a garden with the help of a professional landscape firm in Los Angeles. The program brings together outside volunteers from community based programs and local colleges with incarcerated men for weekly lessons that explore mindfulness, transformative leadership skills, vocational skills, food access, permaculture, and re-entry education.

Two research studies documented a less than 10% recidivism rate for men that had gone through the program at San Quentin Prison, compared to a roughly 55% national recidivism rate. At CSP Lancaster, IGP is part of an ecology of programs that builds communication across races, promotes physical and emotional healing, and provides a space for education and reflection.
