In 2018, the LA County Department of Public Health (DPH) in partnership with First 5 LA and the Department of Health Services, launched the African American Infant and Maternal Mortality (AAIMM) Initiative. Designed to address racism as the root cause feeding the disproportionate rates of Black infant and maternal deaths, AAIMM engages in a collaborative, community-driven process to center equity, the expertise of those with lived experiences and the leadership of Black women in fostering healthy, joyous births. While the coronavirus pandemic has heightened additional questions about racial injustice more broadly, the county’s north star around birth equity remains unchanged: create the systems and conditions where Black moms and babies can thrive regardless of age, educational attainment, or socio-economic status.

Join a panel of experts in discussing how the AAIMM work is a critical touchstone in LA County’s road to an equitable recovery.

After our panel discussion, we will have a peer-to-peer opportunity to come together to exchange information and discuss the unique challenges and opportunities of working in philanthropy as a health funder during this challenging time and identify future topics for our September session. These series will now be in webinar format until further notice.

The SCG Health Funders Group is a peer group of funders seeking to improve the health and well-being of the communities they serve. These facilitated sessions provide opportunities for shared learning and collaboration. All funders seeking to address barriers to health and equity through an intersectional approach are welcome.
