Join us for a joint meeting of the LA Arts Funders and SCG Veterans Funders Groups on Thursday, January 9 from 10 am – noon at DIAVOLO Dance Theatre.

The meeting will feature a deep dive into The Veterans Project, which utilizes DIAVOLO’s unique style of movement as a tool to help restore veterans’ physical, mental and emotional strengths through workshops and public performances in communities all around the country. Following a special performance by The Veterans Project, Bill Ahmanson, President of The Ahmanson Foundation, will talk with Jacques Heim, Founder and Artistic Director of DIAVOLO. They will be joined in conversation by Christopher Loverro, an Iraq War veteran and past participant, and Dr. Art DeGroat of Kansas State University, who recently conducted an evaluation of the project’s impact.

Following the conversation, each group will meet separately to exchange updates and help requests among members.

Since 2016, DIAVOLO has worked with more than 500 veterans and active military members in providing intimate movement workshops in conjunction with art therapy sessions. Workshops led to the creation of a piece performed by the veterans participants themselves titled A Long Journey Home. The piece was performed to sold out audiences all over Los Angeles with one special performance at the historic John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Since then, The Veterans Project has expanded to cities all across the U.S. including extended residencies in Manhattan, KS; Tampa, FL; Orange, CA; and New Orleans, LA. In 2018, Senator Benjamin Allen invited DIAVOLO to testify on the importance of veterans in the arts in a special joint committee hearing at the California State Senate.
