Join us to learn from leading experts about opportunities and innovative approaches in English Language Learning. English Language Learners (ELs) comprise 60% of California’s children birth to age 5 – children who live in homes where English is not the first or only language spoken – and LA county has one of the largest concentrations of EL students across the state. The achievement gap between ELs and non-ELs is dramatic. Recent results from California's Smarter Balanced Assessment show that under the new Common Core State Standards, the achievement gap is not shrinking and 65% of English Learners failed to meet basic standards in English Language Arts and Mathematics. Recent research confirms that supporting our youngest ELs to gain a strong foundation for language, literacy, and learning is an essential step to addressing this achievement gap.
