SCG members are invited by the Mayor's Fund for Los Angeles, Southern California Grantmakers, and the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation to a collaborative dialogue on philanthropy’s important role when disaster strikes. The meeting will take place on Wednesday, February 26th from 12:00 pm- 1:00 pm in the Mayor's Press Conference Room at City Hall. Lunch and parking will be provided.

History has shown that philanthropy consistently steps up in support of post-disaster relief and recovery efforts, often acting more quickly than others to assist vulnerable populations and hardest-hit communities. We’ve learned from our counterparts in New York and New Jersey (Superstorm Sandy), Louisiana (Hurricane Katrina), and Colorado (statewide flooding) that post-disaster support can be better coordinated and effective with pre-planning among the sectors, including philanthropy.  Knowing the high seismic risk facing our region, it is critical to consider our shared leadership role in advance.

At SCG’s Annual Conference in November, Mayor Garcetti pledged his leadership to work with philanthropy to ensure that we are prepared and ready to strategically respond both across the City and the region.  The Mayor’s Fund for Los Angeles, uniquely positioned next to City government, has been charged with leading this effort in cooperation with the Los Angeles Emergency Department, LAPD, LAFD and other relevant departments, as well as with Southern California Grantmakers, the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation and other concerned and interested philanthropic partners.  Together, we believe we can create a structure that ensures coordination and serves as a model for the nation.
At this lunch, we hope to launch this effort with a dialogue together, building upon learnings from fellow regions and the work of the Center for Disaster Philanthropy.
