The Public Policy Speaker Series provides SCG members the opportunity to engage with public officials and participate in meaningful discussions on the policy issues affecting Southern California and the state, and the role which philanthropy can play as thought partners to support our communities.

In this interactive conversation with Tara Roth, President of the Goldhirsh Foundation, Senator Allen will share his public policy vision for the state, particularly in education, the arts, and the environment. As chair of the Senate Education Committee, Senator Allen has led legislative efforts to bring additional public resources to Southern California. For example, he authored SB 140, which would have given priority Promise Zone neighborhoods for receiving funds under the state’s Learning Communities for School Success Program. This would have benefited six federally-designated Promise Neighborhoods, including Los Angeles, which have realized improvement in educational outcomes through this program.

In addition to his chairmanship of the Senate Education Committee, Senator Allen serves as chair of the Joint Committee on the Arts, which includes both members of the Assembly and the Senate. In this capacity, he authored successful legislation that reinstated teaching credentials for Theatre and Dance educators. This year, he authored of SB 777, which proposes that the State Department of Education establish a statewide program to provide professional development training to assist school districts and county boards of education with offering instruction in visual and performing arts.

Finally, Senator Allen has provided thought leadership on issues related to the environment, including ocean protection, climate change, and pollution.

Senator Allen represents state Senate District 26, which encompasses the Westside, Hollywood, and coastal South Bay communities of Los Angeles County.  In our continued effort to identify public-private partnerships, Senator Allen will discuss opportunities for philanthropy to work together with the Senator’s Office to further strengthen our communities.
