Access to food is a basic human right. But here, in LA County, food insecurity is a reality for many of our fellow Angelenos. With the onset of COVID-19, this reality has become amplified as an increasing number of our neighbors find themselves without work, homebound, and with limited opportunity to access public resources.

The Los Angeles Regional Food Bank (LAFB) alone has seen a 80% increase in the amount of food distributed with recent mobile distributions ranging from 800 to 7,560 families served. Over the next few months, the number of people needing food assistance could increase by 2 million residents.

Since March, they have distributed 16.2 million pounds of food, the equivalent of 13.5 million meals. This is even more heavily impacted by the numbers of pantries and distribution sites shutting their doors due to contamination and reduced volunteerism as a result of the virus. Many volunteers are required to stay at home because they are 65 years or older. And it does not include the work being done by organizations such as Food Forward, the school districts and the many nonprofits that have expanded their services to include food as the need grows amongst their constituency. Current food supply and delivery in LA County is a patchwork quilt of providers, tools, delivery methods and resources with some collaboration but not enough.

We know food security will continue to be a challenge in the weeks and months to come. Please join Antonia Hernandez from California Community Foundation, Cinny Kennard from the Annenberg Foundation, Gary Gero, Director of LA County’s Emergency Food Security Branch, Sumi Parekh, Executive Officer, LA Mayor's Office of Economic Development, and Michael Flood, President and CEO of the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank to learn about existing efforts and opportunities for partnership.
