A KCET series examining Eastern Coachella Valley, produced in partnership with The California Endowment, highlights the abundant agricultural industry which attracts a largely immigrant, Latinx population. What is often unknown about a region that provides farm goods to the rest of the country is that roughly two-thirds of residents fall below 200 percent of the poverty line, more than twice the rate for other nearby communities. Residents often live in substandard housing, drink tainted water and struggle to feed their own families. Amid these challenges, community pride and parents’ aspirations of a better life for their children fuel hope for the future.

Join us for a tour showcasing activism and innovation led by local residents, organizations and elected officials who are working together to improve the quality of life and health in this region. Participants will learn about ongoing infrastructure work to bring basic services like parks and transportation to rural communities, give low-income neighborhoods safe and drinkable water and make schools more positive learning environments by engaging youth leaders.

We will hear from:

  • Elected leaders like Assembly member Eduardo Garcia, Riverside County Supervisor V. Manuel Perez and Coachella Valley Water District Board Member Castulo Estrada
  • Community members and resident-led groups like Coachella Valley Parents and the Youth Organizing Council
  • Organizations working collaboratively to support Eastern Coachella Valley residents, including Alianza Coachella Valley, the Sierra Club, Pueblo Unido CDC, Kounkuey Design Initiative, and Lideres Campesinas
