Philanthropy California and the Trust-Based Philanthropy Project invite you to join us for a monthly webinar series for funders. Each month, we’ll explore each of the six trust-based principles that, when practiced together, help alleviate power imbalance in the sector. Each webinar will explore the nuts and bolts of putting the principles to practice, while offering opportunities for peer learning and reflection.

In the fifth of our seven-part series, we’ll explore soliciting & acting on feedback, one of the core principles of a trust-based approach. Why? Because grantee partners provide valuable perspective that can help make our work better and more effective as funders. So what are some ways to solicit feedback well? And what are some faceplant moments that others have had that we should avoid? And what do we do if a grantee offers feedback we don’t like, or simply can’t accommodate? Join us as we explore all the various scenarios of when and how to solicit feedback, what various tools you can use to get insights into your practice, and how to keep grantee partners in the loop on how you’re incorporating their feedback (or not). 

 

Speakers

Pia Infante 

Co-Executive Director, The Whitman Institute

Pia believes we have the collective imagination and power to redesign philanthropy to center the people we serve. Philippine-born, California-grown, and queer, oldest daughter in an immigrant family, Pia navigates difference to broker connection. Pia brings her chops as a former high school teacher, organizational development consultant, and nonprofit manager to her work. Pia is a nationally recognized advocate for trust-based philanthropy and radically embodied leadership. She chairs the Trust-Based Philanthropy Project steering committee and serves on the board of MediaJustice.org. Pia is visiting faculty at the University of Vermont's Rubenstein School of Environment, and speaks and teaches in many settings. She holds a M.A. in Education from the New School for Social Research, and a B.A. in Rhetoric from The University of California at Berkeley. Pia is a proud long time resident of Oakland, CA.  

Austin Long
Center for Effective Philanthropy
 

Austin Long leads relationships with funders using CEP’s assessments and customized advisory engagements. He oversees the creation and presentation of CEP’s assessment reports, and assists in the development of new assessments and services. Austin is a frequent speaker at national conferences and to funder boards and staff on topics of grantee, donor, and foundation staff feedback.

Before joining CEP in 2011, Austin worked at the Corporate Executive Board where he led employee engagement surveys, assessments, research, and strategic planning with a global membership of senior executives. Austin holds a BS in Engineering Science with concentrations in Corporate Strategy and Management of Technology from Vanderbilt University. He works remotely in Denver, CO.

 

Phil Li 

President of the Robert Sterling Clark Foundation in New York

Before joining Robert Sterling Clark, Phil served as the Chief Operating Officer at The Century Foundation, a public policy think tank, and at the Brooklyn Community Foundation, where he helped the organization convert from a private foundation to a public charity. For four years he led the philanthropic practice at Changing Our World, a nonprofit consultancy and before that he worked with the Annie E. Casey Foundation on two of its leadership development initiatives. Phil served as the Executive Director of the Coro New York Leadership Center, a nonprofit that trains and develops individuals interested in public affairs for four years.  He was introduced to Coro as a participant in its Leadership New York program, which prompted him to jump to the nonprofit sector from Wall Street. He started his career at Merrill Lynch and finished as a junk bond analyst with Moody’s Investors Service.

Phil currently serves on the board of Grantmakers for Effective Organizations and the United Philanthropy Forum.  A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Phil has a BA in Economics and Biology and an MBA from The Wharton School in Finance and Strategic Planning. 

 

Claire Peeps

Executive Director, Durfee Foundation

Claire Peeps is the executive director of the Durfee Foundation. Previously she served as the Associate Director of the Los Angeles Festival, as the publisher of High Performance Magazine, and as director of education at the Ansel Adams Center/Friends of Photography. She has served as a consultant to the J. Paul Getty Center, the San Francisco Art Institute, The Music Center of Los Angeles County, and ARTS Inc, among others, and has served as president of Grantmakers in the Arts, chair of Southern California Grantmakers, and vice chair of the California Council for the Humanities. Claire is a Commissioner for the Los Angeles County Arts Commission, appointed by Supervisor Sheila Kuehl to represent the Third District. She is a Senior Fellow at the UCLA Luskin School of Public Policy, and an adjunct instructor at the USC Price School of Public Policy. Her book, Activists Speak Out: Reflections on the Pursuit of Change in America, was published by St. Martins/ Palgrave in March 2001. She is a graduate of Stanford University and the University of New Mexico, and holds certificates from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University.

 

Shaady Salehi

Director, Trust-Based Philanthropy Project

Shaady Salehi is a social impact leader who helps funders and nonprofits clarify their story to realize their vision. Throughout her career, Shaady has worked in various sectors -- from philanthropy, to social justice, to public media -- using strategic communications to galvanize coalitions, establish legacies, generate buy-in, and strengthen networks. Previously Shaady was Managing Director of Distribution and Impact at ITVS, where she led a team to advance the reach and impact of documentaries on public television. Prior to ITVS, she was Executive Director of Active Voice, a pioneering organization that uses storytelling to catalyze social change. Shaady is a 2014 Aspen Institute Fellow and sits on the board of Let It Ripple, a nonprofit that experiments with collaborative filmmaking for the common good. She holds an M.S. in Strategic Communications from Columbia University, an M.A. in Anthropology from UC Davis, and a B.A. in Anthropology from Oberlin College.
