Please join SCG and Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation - Los Angeles, in partnership with Enterprise Community Partners and Designing the WE, for a private, docent-led tour and panel discussion of Undesign the Redline—a one-of-a-kind interactive exhibit exploring the history of race, class and U.S. housing policy, and how this legacy of inequity and exclusion continues to shape our communities.

Low income communities of color have suffered exponential and generational impacts of redlining. In addition to historic lack of opportunity, residents and businesses in these redlined neighborhoods are now becoming increasingly vulnerable to displacement. We must work to undesign this inequity and accelerate practical, multifaceted solutions for building and preserving inclusive neighborhoods in the LA region. This important exhibit about the effects of redlining will only be in Los Angeles through the end of March, so don’t miss this private opportunity to learn and discuss this important topic with your philanthropy colleagues.

Following the tour, we will engage in a spirited discussion about how this information might impact your grantmaking strategies.

 

Speakers

 

Fred Ali
President and CEO
Weingart Foundation

Fred Ali has more than 40 years of senior management experience with philanthropy, nonprofit organizations, educational institutions and government. He began his career in 1972 as a volunteer teacher and counselor in a small western Alaska village. Over the next 19 years, Fred held a number of leadership positions in Alaska with nonprofit organizations, state government, and higher education. In 1991, he became the executive director of Covenant House in Los Angeles. Under Fred’s leadership, Covenant House California developed into a large, multi-service program working with homeless and at-risk youth in Los Angeles and Oakland.

Fred was appointed president of the Weingart Foundation in 1999. He serves on the boards of Covenant House California, the MLK Health and Wellness Community Development Corporation, and the Mayor’s Fund for Los Angeles. Fred also chairs the board of advisors for the University of Southern California’s Center on Philanthropy and Public Policy and co-chairs the Center’s national advisory committee for the Irene Hirano Inouye’s Philanthropic Leadership Fund. Fred speaks regularly on issues pertaining to the nonprofit sector including equity, organizational effectiveness and capacity building.

Braden Crooks

Braden Crooks is a gardener turned landscape architect who entered into the fray of community organizing and advocacy. He founded Groundswell PA: an organization that passed the first popular vote to ban fracking using an Environmental Bill of Rights. Braden earned his Master of Science with departmental honors from Parsons in New York, where he hones his praxis developing forms of horizontal organizing within solidarity economies. Braden has recently worked with organizations such as the Center for Urban Pedagogy and the Right to the City Alliance, and in his spare time produces a web series about New York.

 

Mary Lee
Former Deputy Director
PolicyLink

Mary Lee is the former Deputy Director of PolicyLink, a national advocacy organization working to advance racial equity and social justice. Mary helped to guide PolicyLink efforts related to health and community development, providing research, strategic planning, technical assistance and training to public and private agencies collaborating to build healthy communities. She has co-authored reports and journal articles on health equity, access to healthy food, the built environment, and the impact of place and race on health. A practicing attorney for over 25 years, Mary has experience using civil rights, land use and economic development strategies to revitalize neighborhoods and enhance public participation in the policy arena. She has focused on the legal rights of low-income people, utilizing her expertise in affordable housing, job creation and redevelopment law. Further, she has been an adjunct professor of law and has developed and taught courses at the undergraduate and community college level on community development and civil rights. She is a native of Los Angeles, and holds a BA in Political Studies from Pitzer College in Claremont, California and a JD from Boalt Hall School of Law, U. C. Berkeley.

 

Beatriz Solís
Director of Healthy Communities (South)
The California Endowment

Dr. Beatriz María Solís is Director, Healthy Communities, South Region at The California Endowment. Dr. Solís is responsible for advancing the vision and strategic direction of the foundation’s Building Healthy Communities: California Living 2.0 initiative, as well as helping achieve established goals and outcomes through The Endowment’s philanthropic efforts in Southern California. Her professional experience includes service as the Director of Cultural and Linguistic Services for L.A. Care Health Plan. She has co-authored numerous articles, books, technical reports and policy briefs and is a lecturer/trainer to health care providers.

 

Jacqueline Waggoner

Jacqueline Waggoner is vice president and Southern California market leader for Enterprise Community Partners, Inc. She oversees Enterprise’s affordable housing, community development, investment and strategic programs from the state’s Central Coast to San Diego. Jacqueline started with Enterprise in 2005.  She has worked with the city of Los Angeles, banks and nonprofit developer partners to create local funds for affordable housing, advocate for low-income families and support Enterprise’s vision of providing communities of opportunity. Jacqueline serves on the 10-member Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA) Commission, the agency’s governing board, and chairs LAHSA's Ad Hoc Committee on Black People Experiencing Homelessness. She is also a member of the County of Los Angeles Tenant Protections Working Group. Jacqueline serves on the board of directors of the Southern California Association of Nonprofit Housing (SCANPH),the California Housing Consortium, the Los Angeles Business Council, and Restore Neighborhoods LA, Inc. A Los Angeles native, Jacqueline has a bachelor’s degree in sociology and a master’s degree in urban planning from UCLA. Her experience in commercial real estate lending spans more than 20 years. Before joining Enterprise, she was vice president for community lending with Wells Fargo Bank in Los Angeles.
