Nonprofit organizations, knowingly or not, often generate unrelated business income (known as UBI) that provides vital support for mission activities.  

Please join us for a special program hosted and sponsored by Moss Adams LLP, where we will walk through what grantmakers need to know about UBI and the common sources of it for grantmakers.  

Moss Adams LLP Partner Tracy Paglia will lead the session, going beyond the basics to talk about exceptions, exclusions, and what the organization can do to minimize the tax paid from this income.

Participants will learn several key concepts about UBIs:

The three factors required for an activity to be considered unrelated

  • Important exceptions to and exclusions from UBI treatment
  • What organizations can do to avoid UBI treatment through planning and structure
  • Other concerns to think about when considering an unrelated activity, such as state tax implications, the effect to the organization’s exempt status, and property tax exclusions.
