Why is there an affordable housing crisis in Ventura County, how do we turn the tide around, and what can foundations do to help?

We’ll hear from Linda Braunschweiger, CEO of the Housing Trust Fund of Ventura County and Margarita de Escontrias, CEO of Cabrillo Economic Development Corporation to learn how we can work together to create and preserve affordable housing in Ventura County. Housing Trust Funds are able to attract capital from sources not traditionally dedicated to housing. The Housing Trust Fund of Ventura County is funded through a number of sources: local government contributions; State of California Housing Bond Funds approved by the voters; grants from foundations and businesses; and from individual donations. They leverage these funds to build a revolving loan fund dedicated to expanding affordable and workforce housing.

Cabrillo Economic Development Corporation provides comprehensive housing services and community economic development activities through a community-building approach. CEDC develops ownership and rental housing that forms the foundation for people to improve their quality of life.

Lunch is sponsored by the McCune Foundation

Linda Braunschweiger has spent close to thirty years in finance, affordable housing development, non-profit management and business. As CEO of the Housing Trust Fund of Ventura County, she raised over $6M in public, private and charitable funds, and funded $4.7M in short term loans of which the majority has already been repaid.  She manages and guides a nineteen-member board of directors and is the primary visionary for the strategic direction of the Housing Trust Fund.  Under her leadership, HTF-Ventura County became a certified Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) at the Federal and State level.  Ms. Braunschweiger is an affordable housing advocate and a recognized leading voice of housing for all in Ventura County.

Margarita de Escontrias is a veteran community builder. She has worked in both rural and large urban centers, specializing in affordable housing, urban infill, economic development, transit-oriented development projects and rural development. With a strong focus in largely underserved urban and rural communities, her public sector career has spanned more than 30 years. Ms. de Escontrias currently serves as the CEO at Cabrillo Economic Development Corporation based out of Ventura.
