Family Foundation Information Exchange

SCG’s highly regarded Family Foundation Information Exchange (FFIX) peer learning groups provide ongoing support and best practices through intensive discussions with peers. Facilitated by family foundation consultant Jan Kern, FFIX serves as a vehicle to explore new avenues of grantmaking, gain critical skills and find support and encouragement among peers.

Each FFIX cohort is a small group of family foundation executives who meet on a regular basis to discuss, problem-solve and share critical ideas that will assist them in their group. The group includes family members as well as professional staff.

Each group meets five times per year, every other month except over the summer. Schedules and meeting locations are set by the members to accommodate their calendars.

Recent member-selected topics have included the following:

  • Keeping Your Trustees Engaged
  • Grantmaking, Geography & Leadership: Reviewing Your Geographic Commitment
  • Leadership in Transition
  • The Art of Funding Innovation
  • What We Need to Know About Federal Legislation
  • Case Study: A Nonprofit Merger
  • Making the Most of Site Visits
  • Avoiding Avoidance
  • Succession Planning

"I joined the original FFIX group at the start of my career in philanthropy 13 years ago. This group is as invaluable to me today as it was then. It is one of the greatest opportunities for connecting, sharing and learning that I have encountered"                                             - Rachel Roth, Roth Family Foundation

"FFIX has been a lifesaver! It has helped me with all the weird, small, but super important stuff related to working with family. As an office of one, I really look forward to hearing and learning from what others are doing. Also having a safe place to vent and be supported has meant the world to me and helped me be better at my job."

- Blair Carty, Adams Legacy Foundation

"I share my most important worries, questions and successes with my FFIX group. They have become my touchstone - my closest friends and most respected advisors in the foundation world."

- Cathy Hession, The Carol & James Collins Foundation

"Starting out in philanthropy, FFIX connected me with colleagues who had navigated the unique challenges of managing a family foundation. Now, a few years later, FFIX has become my support group and learning community, as well as where I have discovered exciting grantmaking collaborations."

- Lauren Johnson, Louis L. Borick Foundation
