SCG's Health Funders Group: Leveraging Tech to Support Families — Lessons from Home Visiting in LA County
The COVID-19 crisis has spurred the increased adoption of virtual platforms facilitating access to family supports and health services more than ever before. Virtual social services are increasingly demanding engagement with technology to enroll in care, access personal health information, and communicate with providers.
Home visiting programs provide information, guidance, mental health, and developmental screening and connect families with health services and other resources in their communities to meet their needs. These programs are not only associated with improved health and family outcomes but are also key to advancing health equity and addressing disparities. However, not all families have equal access to devices, connectivity, and the capacity to use technology effectively. Parents and caregivers have not received adequate training or support to assume these increased responsibilities across systems. While the utilization of virtual home visits is rising – one program model had over 6,000 visits conducted virtually since March 2020, with approximately 75% occurring on virtual platforms – such digital engagement is difficult for families who may have limited digital literacy, language barriers, and time constraints.
Join SCG’s Health Funders Group on December 1st to discuss the home visiting system-building effort in LA County and how providers pivoted to meet the needs of families during the pandemic. Attendees will learn about county-wide efforts to build a highly integrated and comprehensive home visiting services system following recent Supervisorial Board Motions. Panelists will include county leaders, philanthropic investors, and home visitors who will discuss lessons learned and opportunities to engage on future policy and systems change efforts to provide sustainable and flexible access to home visiting services.
