Job Description: 

The Kavli Foundation is a non-profit philanthropic organization dedicated to advancing science for the benefit of humanity, promoting public understanding of scientific research and supporting scientists and their work. The Controller position reports to the Vice President of Finance and Administration/CFO (VPFA).

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Development & implementation of Foundation strong accounting policies & procedures.
  • Establish strong internal controls and safeguards for the receipt of revenue, costs and both program budgets and actual expenditures.
  • The Interim Controller will be responsible for the documentation of Foundation processes, workflows, and training material.
  • Responsible for IRS Private Foundation compliance & regulatory accounting practices.  Manage all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Keeping up to date and implementing regulatory reporting, frequently including tax planning and compliance
  • Oversee the grants and contracts management area. 
  • Prepare regular and ad hoc internal and external financial statements and budget reports
  • Coordinating activities of external auditors and other outside parties
  • Providing VP Finance & Administration with information vital to the decision-making process
  • Assessing current accounting operations, offering recommendations for improvement and implementing new processes, systems. 
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of accounting and other software and supporting databases.  Compile and analyze systems including Intacct and Concur
  • Integrate various systems and databases.  Eliminate back logs, leverage new technology and responding proactively to other department needs.
  • Developing and monitoring business performance metrics
  • Commitment to training, mentoring, and retaining a diverse team; the foresight and ability to delegate accordingly.
  • Doing day to day transactional work including recording accounting entries and checking for accuracy of staff. 
  • Working on various projects as needed

Core Qualifications:

  • Minimum bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Economics or Finance Required. Masters or CPA desirable.
  • A working knowledge of accounting in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting principles (GAAP).  To include significant experience in or knowledge of nonprofit accounting, grant accounting compliance and reporting.
  • Prior nonprofit finance experience with successful track record in a senior financial management role for at least 10+ years is essential.  At least five years of experience as a Controller or equivalent, in a nonprofit organization with a budget of at least $20 million.
  • Solid analytical, technological, and organizational skills with attention to priorities and details.
  • Grants & Contracts experience preferred in a grant making capacity
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively be part of collaborative workforce.
  • Intact Finance Software experience preferred.
  • Demonstrates a high degree of initiative and resourcefulness, continually seeks information, and looks for new approaches to processes, practices, and learning.
  • Strong conceptual and critical thinking abilities.
  • Excellent computer skills to include MS Office Suite especially MS Excel; experience with database management is expected; driving usage of new systems is preferred. 
  • Keen analytical, organization, and problem-solving skills that support and enable sound decision making in a complex organization; demonstrated resourcefulness in setting and guiding investment in people and systems.
  • Excellent written/oral communication and interpersonal skills.
