JOB SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of and in collaboration with the Senior Director, Impact Initiatives the Director, Impact Communications & Events will be responsible for day-to-day strategic oversight of critical components of the Everyone In campaign and United Way’s larger work to create more supportive and affordable housing and end homelessness across Los Angeles County.

The Director will be responsible for core Everyone In communications, partnerships, and events strategies. They will ensure collaborative alignment and focused execution across the teams responsible for the implementation of these strategies—both internal staff and outside consultants. The Director will also be a strategic thought partner for the other external facing work to end homelessness across United Way initiatives and be a key part of the Community Impact department’s leadership.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • In partnership with the Senior Director, Impact Initiatives and in collaboration with the leadership of both the Impact Initiatives and the Housing & Homelessness teams, lead the ongoing development and implementation of a communications, partnership, and engagement events strategies for Everyone In and United Way’s related work to create more supportive and affordable housing and end homelessness across Los Angeles County.

Communications:

  • Oversee the day-to-day development and execution, in partnership with the Senior Director, Impact Initiatives of the core goals, strategies, tactics and metrics for all communications work related to Everyone In and United Way’s work to end homelessness
  • Manage the Impact Communications & Design Manager on a day-to-day basis to ensure strategy alignment and efficient execution
  • Manage outside consultants to achieve contracted outcomes and maintain budgetary goals
  • Ensure that communications strategies and tactics meet the needs of the Everyone In community organizing team and that the team is as effective as possible in its external communications
  • Ensure accurate and timely information is communicated to key stakeholders and provide proactive support as needed

Partnerships:

  • Develop strategies to recruit and engage institutional partners that align with Everyone In and organizational goals
  • Manage internal staff and external consultants to execute these partnership strategies and ensure integration into the larger campaign framework

Events:

  • Oversee the day-to-day development and execution, in partnership with the Senior Director, Impact Initiatives of the core goals, strategies, tactics and metrics for all event and community engagement work related to Everyone In and United Way’s work to end homelessness
  • Manage the day-to-day work of the Impact Events Manager to ensure strategy alignment and efficient tactical execution

Organizational:

  • Support the Senior Director, Impact Initiatives in ongoing fundraising and development efforts
  • Support implementation of the Community Impact Team’s annual goals and the organization’s strategic plan. Participate in cross-departmental and organizational planning and volunteer efforts as needed
  • Conduct annual performance reviews and provide professional development support for the Impact Communications & Design Manager and Impact Events Manager
  • Work collaboratively with United Way Development & Engagement and Marketing & Communications departments to articulate the value of our mission work and support the development of meaningful engagement opportunities for donors, public
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:          

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience required, Master’s degree preferred
  • Demonstrated work experience and background in homeless services/policy, strategic communications, public/external affairs, community organizing/ engagement work preferred but not required
  • Working knowledge of the root causes of and solutions to homelessness preferred
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with diverse stakeholders, including United Way team members, board members, external partners, and donors
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with all organizational levels within a diverse environment
  • Must be able to exercise initiative, independent good judgment, flexibility, discretion, and solid decision making
  • Must be able to utilize creative strategies to engage stakeholders and maintain effective working relationship with key stakeholders
  • Should possess strong written, and verbal communication skills, as well as the ability to persuade small and large groups alike
  • Must be able to successfully manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, adjust to changing circumstances, and demonstrate confidence working with diverse stakeholders, including nonprofit, public sector, corporate, faith-based, and philanthropic stakeholders
  • Excellent prioritization, project management, and critical thinking skills with a strong sense of focus, organization, follow up, and attention to detail
  • Proactive and self-motivated to execute on responsibilities
  • Positive, can-do attitude with ability to hit the ground running
  • Must thrive under pressure and be able to accept constructive feedback
  • Willing to work flexible hours as needed to support department priorities and events
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint) is essential; experience using Adobe Creative Cloud, Microsoft CRM, or comparable programs is a plus
