Job Description: 

RespectAbility is seeking an experienced content editor looking for a part-time position to join our communications team for project-based work.



The ideal candidate is a sharp, creative editor with a keen eye for detail, a mastery of grammar and mechanics and enthusiasm for RespectAbility’s mission. The content editor will be responsible for ensuring clarity, accuracy and consistency across a range of content, from breaking news stories to toolkits and fundraising collaterals. The content editor will have some writing responsibilities as needed. They also will have or gain solid knowledge of how to ensure all content is fully accessible, including for screen readers.

The Content Editor will report to the VP of Communications and work collaboratively across all of RespectAbility’s departments. This position is part-time with the possibility of becoming full-time with additional responsibilities, depending on additional funding. While RespectAbility has offices outside of Washington, D.C., and in Los Angeles, applications are accepted from anywhere in the United States and will be accepted on a rolling basis. Position will work remotely at least for the duration of the pandemic and has potential to be remote long-term.



  • Edit and proofread blog posts, news stories, toolkits, press releases, fundraising collaterals and website/email copy for grammar, spelling, syntax, punctuation and formatting while preserving style and voice.
  • Fact check numbers, links, proper nouns and other public information and double check information collected from sources.
  • Ensure toolkits and other specified documents are fully accessible and 508 compliant. If applicant does not know how to do this, willingness and desire to learn is necessary.
  • Support Communications team in writing talking points, op-eds, media advisories and press statements as needed.
  • In coordination with the VP of Communications, help develop internal style guide and train other team members in use of appropriate styles.
  • Ability to ensure that content is appropriate for an organization working to end ableism and to represent people with disabilities authentically, accurately and free of stigmas.
  • Effectively use a disability justice frame of reference in writing and editing.



  • Strong commitment to the mission and vision of the organization, including diversity, equity and opportunity for people of all backgrounds and abilities.
  • At least three years of applicable experience, including copy-editing and fact-checking.
  • Working knowledge of AP style and an interest in researching, debating and developing internal style guidelines.
  • Working knowledge of how to avoid ableism and to use appropriate disability-inclusive language, as outlined in our toolkits and the NCDJ style guide.
  • Ability to have a nonpartisan perspective and approach.
  • Excellent communications and organizational skills. Has a proven track record of working as a member of a team and individually to meet goals.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite required. Proficiency with the accessible design of office documents preferred. This proficiency can be gained with free trainings available on the RespectAbility website.
  • Ability to learn and master new issues quickly.
  • Ability to respond to shifting priorities and demands based on the organization’s needs, as well as organize time efficiently and remain attentive to details.
