Program Officer - Transformational Leadership and Special Projects

Program Officer - Transformational Leadership and Special Projects
Job Description:

Angell Foundation is a private grantmaking organization that builds upon the charitable promise of David and Lynn Angell by expanding access to transformative opportunities. We are looking for a dynamic, empathetic, and collaborative Program Officer (PO) who can successfully scale the Foundation’s Transformational Leadership portfolio and manage a small number of special projects that traverse the Foundation’s three focus areas and amplify our impact.

The overall goal of the Transformational Leadership portfolio is to nurture compassionate leaders who foster a more equitable world.  We believe that leaders are at their best when they operate from a place of empathy and integrity, prioritize the well-being of their constituents, and cultivate practices that bolster their personal resilience and effectiveness.  The portfolio focuses on grantmaking across the United States and supports programs for current and emerging leaders in the social or public sectors. Supported work includes fellowships or cohort-based professional development programs that provide learning opportunities that foster participants’ capacity to be self-reflective, navigate difference, strengthen their personal fortitude, and transform the way they lead and advocate for social change.

The Program Officer will continue to refine and scale the portfolio and manage all related grantmaking activities to meet the goals of the strategy, including due diligence, presenting recommendations to the Board, managing the award and reporting process, and maintaining relationships with grantees and stakeholders. Additionally, the Program Officer will oversee the development and ongoing management of a small number of special projects or initiatives.

The ideal candidate will have prior grantmaking experience and/or experience leading an effort that nurtures the personal and professional development of social or public sector leaders. They will also bring a strong understanding of the social sector and challenges leaders face in their roles, be deeply knowledgeable and passionate about issues of equity and justice and have some familiarity with contemplative or self-reflective practices. Candidate must be emotionally intelligent, an excellent communicator, organized self-starter and able to work in an organization with an evolving infrastructure and small team. BA/BS required and MA or other advanced degree is desirable. Technological proficiency and capacity to learn and use new online grants management platform is requisite.

Angell Foundation is committed to supporting our team balance the intersection of their work and personal lives and   offers team members a great degree of flexibility regarding where they work; however, we are not a remote organization. We believe it is important to stay proximate to the people, organizations, and communities that we support and do not intend to rely solely on virtual or passive experiences to deepen our connection to the work, our mission or one another.  The PO will periodically travel, locally and nationally, for site visits/events and at minimum attend Foundation Board meetings and weekly team meetings in person at our West Los Angeles office.
