Southern California Grantmakers (SCG) is a membership association where our region’s philanthropic leaders come together to learn, connect, and take action. Our mission is to champion effective philanthropy and advance collaborative efforts to create meaningful change in our communities. SCG connects grantmakers through sector-wide conferences, trainings, and networking opportunities—providing support and leadership for collaboration on projects and for action on public policy issues. SCG currently brings together 300+ members who represent the spectrum of philanthropy, including foundations, family philanthropy, corporate giving, consultants to philanthropy, and government grantmakers. We also co-lead Philanthropy California, an initiative of Northern California Grantmakers (NCG), Southern California Grantmakers (SCG), and San Diego Grantmakers (SDG) whose combined membership represents more than 600 philanthropic organizations investing billions every year to support communities across the state, the country, and worldwide.


Over the past several years, SCG’s size and scope have grown dramatically. Now, we’re reorganizing and expanding so we can deepen and strengthen our impact in the ways that our members and partners are seeking: more intersectional issue-based programming and professional development that helps funders take bold action for equitable and just impacts in communities; robust, nimble action on policy and advocacy; convening and facilitating collaborations and partnerships; and investing in our own sustainability and capacity to lead as an organization with equity at the center. To support the growth of our work and of our extraordinarily capable current staff, we are excited to add several new positions across the organization.


Position Description


The Digital Communications Senior Associate maintains and builds SCG’s public image across all platforms (website, social media, emails, print communications, etc.) by creating and sharing valuable content that informs and engages members and partners across an integrated suite of cross-platform communications.


Essential duties and responsibilities


  • Serve as email administrator, which includes drafting, setting up, and analyzing multiple email communications per week
  • Draft and post web content and function as content webmaster for SCG, Philanthropy California, Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation – Los Angeles (TRHT-LA) and related websites, ensuring that all content is up-to-date, engaging and well-organized; analyzing data; and, in conjunction with Director of Statewide Technology, identifying and resolving technical issues with vendors
  • Work with partners and relevant staff to develop and deliver communications for key SCG initiatives such as Philanthropy California, the Center for Strategic Partnerships (CSP) and TRHT-LA
  • Help manage the SCG editorial calendar, including working with other teams to determine outreach strategy, distribution list and content approval
  • Serve as the primary “voice of SCG” on social media, monitor accounts and analyze social media data
  • Work across SCG teams to build strong cross-functional relationships and develop knowledge of upcoming communications needs
  • Work with relevant staff to execute strategic cross-platform communications campaigns that share events and other content with targeted communities of audiences (e.g. via Pardot email, social media channels, direct outreach) and drive action in response
  • Play a key role in communications for SCG conferences, including conference design, website and collateral materials
  • Document key systems and procedures relating to all of the above
  • And other duties as assigned


Minimum Requirements


  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in writing-intensive marketing/communications roles, preferably in the philanthropy/nonprofit sector
  • Demonstrated track record of producing communications that spark action, including via social media
  • Passion for and ability to communicate on issues of equity
  • Excellent multi-tasker and project manager with impeccable attention to detail and a proven track record of on-time delivery for complex projects with distributed ownership
  • Exceptional written communication skills and a keen eye for proofreading and editing
  • Excellent collaborative and interpersonal skills, customer service attitude and ability to work effectively with internal and external stakeholders at all levels from a range of backgrounds
  • Very comfortable with technology, including Microsoft Office, Salesforce, Pardot, Drupal, HTML, Asana and Adobe Creative Suite, or similar technologies and platforms
  • Video and photography creation and editing skills a plus
  • Interest in working in a fast-paced, mission-focused environment of cross-functional teams with shared leadership at all levels
