Call for SCG Board Nominations

Friday, May 16, 2014

SCG Nominations Committee Chair Mary Odell Calls for Board Nominations:

Dear Colleagues,

I am writing to ask your assistance in identifying potential candidates for the Board of Directors of Southern California Grantmakers (SCG). The Board plays a critical role in organizational oversight, resource development, member outreach and policy formulation as the organization aims to both provide services to the members and play a leadership role in the field.

SCG is particularly interested in outreach to individuals who meet the following criteria:

  • Play a high-level leadership role in the region’s philanthropic community, as either a senior executive or board trustee;
  • Lead organizations that can commit general operating support or other forms of unrestricted support to SCG;
  • Have expertise in the areas of public policy, venture philanthropy, family philanthropy, and/or nonprofit governance;
  • Demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively with others and come to a consensus; and
  • Are willing to commit the time needed to participate in quarterly Board meetings, as well as committee meetings.

We welcome applications from individuals of all backgrounds, experiences, abilities, and perspectives. We seek to represent the full range of grantmaking entities, now including government grantmakers as well as private-sector funders.

All applicants must have authorization from their institution’s leadership and be affiliated with a member organization in good standing with SCG in order to apply.

Responsibilities of SCG Board members include:

  • Attend all Board meetings (three to four annually);
  • Serve on a committee, if needed, and attend 75% of committee meetings;
  • Assist in securing contributions beyond dues to support SCG’s general operations;
  • Assist in building relationships with donors new to SCG;
  • Serve as an ambassador for the organization and assist with member recruitment and retention;
  • Attend SCG’s Annual Conference and Members’ Meeting as well as any other major convening.

Please note that the slate of nominees will be approved by the Board and then submitted to the membership for a vote at the Annual Members’ Meeting in November 2014. Board member terms are two years and Board members can serve for three terms.

For a list of current Board members and an update on SCG activities, please visit the website at www.socalgrantmakers.org/about/board-of-directors.

Please submit a statement of interest along with a resume to SCG no later than July 31, 2014. Click here for the Board responsibilities statement, which outlines the responsibilities of the Board in more detail.

Thank you in advance for your interest in SCG.

Sincerely,

Mary Odell
Chair, SCG Nominations Committee
