Follow-up: Corporate Reception on Nonprofit Board Service

Tuesday, April 9, 2013

Recently, members of Southern California Grantmakers (SCG) and other corporate colleagues gathered at City Club in downtown Los Angeles for a special reception to share high-level ideas and best practices for engaging corporate employees in nonprofit, private and public board service.

As a follow-up to this event, SCG is pleased to share additional resources related to corporate participation on nonprofit boards, which we have made available on the SCG website.

The reception featured guest speaker Joe Lumarda, senior vice president for Capital Group Private Client Services and vice president of Capital Guardian Trust Company, who shared the unique history and perspective Capital Group brings to corporate philanthropy and community engagement. Participants also heard from Virgil Roberts, co-founder and chair of the African American Board Leadership Institute, which partners with major corporations to build leadership skills and train professionals to serve on boards of nonprofit, private and public organizations.

During this engaging conversation, our guest speakers and participants shared a variety of strategies for conveying the value of service to their companies, as well as ways to build board leadership and governance skills among employees. We look forward to hosting additional dynamic corporate networking and learning opportunities in the near future.
