Historic Opportunity to End Homelessness in Our Region

Thursday, January 14, 2016

Dear Colleagues,

As you may know, both the County and City of Los Angeles have released draft versions of their initiatives to combat homelessness. I want to encourage you to share your feedback on both of these drafts by the public comment deadline on January 21st.

For years, many of you in the SCG community have been deeply involved in working toward solutions to end homelessness—or in connected fields that cut across funding areas, including foster care, criminal justice, domestic violence, veterans, and more.

Now, in a historic effort, more than 20 County departments and the City of Los Angeles are working together with counterparts from cities, other government entities, and community stakeholders to move beyond siloed efforts and build an effective and efficient system to end homelessness.

Here are some important steps you can take:

  • Read the LA County draft here and the City of Los Angeles draft here.
  • Provide public comment on the County draft by January 21st.
  • Attend a public hearing on the City's draft on Wednesday, January 21st; please check the City Clerk website for details.
  • Share the above information with your nonprofit partners and other stakeholders who are working to end homelessness in our region.

This is a powerful cross-cutting issue that touches so many of our community-building efforts, even for those who do not think of themselves as homelessness-focused funders. As philanthropic leaders working tirelessly on behalf of our region, your insight is crucial to developing smart, coordinated strategies to effectively combat homelessness.

Beyond our professional lives and philanthropic priorities, homelessness is a human issue that impacts us all. Thank you for answering the call to help our neighbors in need.

Sincerely,

Christine Essel
