LA County Arts Commission Gives $4.5M in grants to 184 Nonprofits

Thursday, July 30, 2015

A message from Claire Peeps, President, Los Angeles County Arts Commission and Executive Director, Durfee Foundation:

The Los Angeles County Arts Commission recently announced the 2015 list of 184 awardees in the Organizational Grant Program. With these awards, totaling $4,518,000, the County Supervisors have reaffirmed the vital contributions of nonprofit arts organizations to our quality of life and to the vibrant creative economy of our incredibly diverse region.

As a fellow grantmaker, I am especially heartened by the Arts Commission’s commitment to core operating support and multi-year grants (all commitments are for two years). This puts the Arts Commission ahead of the curve in offering nonprofits what they need and ask for most – stability in their operations and continuity toward future planning. And there’s more good news: more than half of the awarded funds will go to supporting ongoing salaries or new jobs. So not only are county dollars providing excellence in arts and culture, they are putting Angelinos to work. Way to go!

I was also impressed by the expertise, efficiency and equity of the Arts Commission’s peer panel review process. More than 60 knowledgeable and accomplished arts professionals generously shared their time to review grant applications, bringing multiple perspectives and an opportunity for dialogue to the selection process. And by inviting them in, the Arts Commission demystifies the grantmaking world and sends these leaders back into the community, both as better grant writers and as informed ambassadors for our work. It’s a win-win.
