LA County Board of Supervisors Adopts First Ever Mission Statement on Child Safety

Wednesday, April 1, 2015

In the Final Report of the LA County Blue Ribbon Commission on Child Protection Commission, issued on April 18, 2014, the Commission’s first recommendation was for the Board to “Articulate a County-wide Mission to Prioritize and Improve Child Safety.”

In January, the Board of Supervisors approved Supervisor Sheila Kuehl’s proposal, co-authored with Supervisor Hilda Solis, to chart a new course for the County’s child-welfare programs and services by establishing, for the first time, a mission statement setting out the responsibilities of all departments for the safety of children in the County.

At today’s Board meeting, this final mission statement was adopted in a unanimous vote. The mission statement clearly states the Board’s and the County’s commitment for prioritizing and improving child protection across all involved County departments.

“This is a vitally important step in sending a message to all of our departments in the County that the Board is serious about keeping our kids safe. There’s a reason this was the Blue Ribbon Commission’s first recommendation, and that’s because it lays out a framework of values for all of the work we have ahead in protecting children across LA,” said Kuehl after the motion passed.
