Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation to Hold Town Hall Meeting on Universally Accessible Dodgers Dreamfield

Tuesday, January 27, 2015

Next Tuesday, February 3rd at 6:00 pm, the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation will host a Town Hall Meeting to discuss plans to build a Universally Accessible Dodgers Dreamfield and receive feedback from organizations and funders that have a keen interest in children with disabilities or special needs.

The Foundation believes there is something about playing sports that lights up a youngster’s eyes. But for children with intellectual and physical disabilities, those opportunities are not always available. The LA Dodgers Foundation, Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation and The Miracle League are changing the game for these children by building them a field of their own.  They are teaming up to build the Universally Accessible Dodgers Dreamfield at Baldwin Hills Recreation Center (located at 5401 Highlight Pl., Los Angeles, CA 90016) this summer.

The impact that this field and program will have on the community goes far beyond the hundreds of children directly served. Its adapted program and inclusive environment give parents an extended network of support and fellowship with other families. The Miracle League will also provide many volunteer opportunities per year. These volunteers, including peer-level youth, learn valuable life lessons that last well beyond their time on the ball field. In short, the program helps to bridge the gap between children with disabilities and the world around them.

Joining this Town Hall Meeting will be representatives from the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation, and The Miracle League, who are the three initial partners on this project. Over 20 nonprofit organizations who work with children with disabilities will attend the meeting to learn about the project and the programming that envisioned to take place at this field. Nonprofits will also provide their feedback about how to establish strong programming at the Universally Accessible Dodgers Dreamfield that works for the children with disabilities that they work with on a daily basis.

The Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation is very excited to embark on this project that will provide a field that allows youngsters with disabilities, who might not have been able to play on our traditional Dreamfields, a special field just for them!
