New Liaison Will Build Stronger Ties Between County and Philanthropic Groups

Wednesday, June 17, 2015

The below article was published in Los Angeles Supervisor Hilda Solis's newsletter on June 17, 2015:

Supervisor Hilda L. Solis recently introduced an innovative motion that would establish a new position of Philanthropy Liaison in the County to work specifically with the philanthropic community in creating programs for at-risk children.

Supervisor Solis introduced the pioneering motion at the June 16 meeting of the Board of Supervisors with co-author Sheila Kuehl. Joining them in support were Chris Essel, who heads Southern California Grantmakers, and Weingart Foundation CEO Fred Ali.

The new Philanthropy Liaison would work within the County’s Office of Child Protection to ensure the highest level of dialogue, as well as coordination and collaboration, between philanthropy and the County to benefit children.  Already endorsing the initiative are 10 major philanthropic groups: The Ahmanson Foundation, Annenberg Foundation, Blue Shield of California Foundation, California Community Foundation, The California Endowment, Hilton Foundation, The James Irvine Foundation, Ralph M. Parsons Foundation, UniHealth Foundation and the Weingart Foundation.

“The power of public-private partnerships has been under-utilized within the County.  This motion changes that unfortunate dynamic,” Supervisor Solis said. “With a Philanthropy Liaison in place, we will be far better positioned to combine the best thinking and resources of government and philanthropy into programs that work for children. That is why this initiative is a priority for me.”
