SoCalGas’ Environmental Champions Grant Initiative Is Now Open!

SoCalGas® is looking to fund innovative projects or programs that address clean air, clean energy and clean water with a particular emphasis on supporting underserved communities.



The following groups are eligible to apply:

  • 501(c)(3) organizations that provide programs in communities in the counties of Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino, Riverside, Imperial, Kern, Kings, Ventura, Tulare, Santa Barbara, Fresno, San Luis Obispo.
  • Projects must commence in 2018 or 2019 and be 85% completed by December 31, 2019.
  • Notifications of winners made and grant checks awarded by December 14, 2018.
  • Eligible proposals include new or existing projects or programs that address the local challenges of clean air, clean water and clean energy. Clean energy projects that utilize natural gas, renewable gas and/or biogas will be given special consideration.



A panel of SoCalGas representatives will use the following criteria to score projects:

  • Effectively addresses the clean air, clean energy or clean water challenge.
  • Innovative, creative and encourages collaboration.
  • Supports low income communities/communities of color with limited resources.
  • Has existing partial funding that can be leveraged by a new grant.
  • Minimizes indirect administrative costs.
  • Defines success/outcomes clearly and has quantifiable results.
  • Demonstrates measurable outcomes within 12 months of the award.
  • Involves promotion and marketing with other partners or has significant outreach opportunities. This could include volunteer opportunities or participation by a large number of SoCalGas employees.



Requests to the following are excluded:

  • Individuals
  • Groups that practice discrimination based on age, gender, sexual orientation, marital status, physical or mental disabilities, race, color, religion, national origin or ancestry.
  • Sectarian or denominational religious groups, except for programs that are broadly promoted, available to any one and free from religious orientation.


Funds cannot be used for:

  • General operating expenses that are unrelated to the execution of the proposed program/project
  • Equipment purchases not primarily related to the intended purpose of the fund
  • Advocacy initiatives/programs that are political in nature
  • Land acquisitions
  • Research-related projects
  • Capital campaigns
  • Major travel expenses
  • Loans or loan guarantees
  • Debt reduction or past operating deficits
  • Liquidation of an organization



The online application for the Environmental Champions grant program is available from June 27, to August 1, 2018. Applications must be submitted by 5 p.m. on August 1, 2018. Applicants will receive a confirmation email acknowledging receipt of their application.



Due to the volume of requests, we cannot respond to inquiries. If you feel your project or program is eligible, we encourage you to submit your application.


The application submission period begins on June 27, 2018 and ends at 5 p.m. on August 1, 2018.
