Addressing California's Food and Income Security for a Vulnerable Community

In a recent report, the Legislative Analyst’s Office (LAO) initiated a study of the potential effects of ending the cash-out process for the Supplementary Security Income (SSI) / State Supplementary Payment (SSP) program. SSI / SSP provides monthly cash grants to low-income aged, blind, and disabled persons in California. SSI is the federally funded portion of the program, while SSP is funded through state funds.

Counting All Californians in the 2020 Census

Independent researcher and demographer Dr. William P. O’Hare published a report on the changing demographics of California and their impact on the 2020 Census. The report focuses on the fastest growing groups in the state as well as the largest nine counties. Dr. O’Hare notes that persons in the aforementioned categories include hard-to-count (HTC) communities that are likely to be missed in the Census. Despite the state’s efforts and resources in place to make sure there is a complete count in California, the underfunding of the 2020 Census increases the risks of higher undercounts.

Strategies for Supporting AAPI, Black, and LGBTQ Immigrants

On November 28, 2017, Grantmakers Concerned with Immigrants and Refugees (GCIR) hosted a webinar, “United for All Dreamers: Strategies for Supporting AAPI, Black and LGBTQ immigrants”. The presentation focused on how funders can support Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and Temporary Protected Status (TPS) recipients after the White House announced the DACA program phase-out and the removal of TPS designation for certain countries.
