Employment provides a pathway to health and well-being for veterans

Earlier this year, Anthony Robinson, a veteran of the U.S. Navy, was sleeping in his car every night. He had visited many job placement centers, but had not been able to secure employment. He was discouraged but refused to give up. He had a family who was depending on him, and he wanted to be a good role model for his children.

A Movement to Transform Foster Parenting

This report by the Annie E. Casey Foundation explores ways for public agencies to ensure that children receive the care they need by enlisting more volunteers to step forward as foster parents and by encouraging the extraordinary individuals who have already answered the call to continue their commitment to care. The report identifies three major themes for engaging and empowering foster parents: ensuring quality caregiving for children; forging strong relationships; and, finding and keeping more amazing caregivers.

Over the past months and weeks, countless conversations with my colleagues, friends, partners, and peers in social justice have focused on the complexities and cruelties of 2016: From Brexit in the United Kingdom, to the rejection of a peace deal in Colombia, to the ongoing violence and refugee crisis in the Middle East, to, of course, America’s presidential election. In all of this, there is so much at stake for our world, so much injustice to assess, understand, and address. There is so much uncertainty.

New Study Examines How Creative Placemaking Builds Social Capital in Communities

As interest in measuring and understanding the impact of arts investments in community development continues to grow, a new study released in November, Setting the Stage for Community Change: Reflecting on Creative Placemaking Outcomes, offers insights for the field of “creative placemaking” and is a working illustration of what can and can’t be learned from different impact measurement approaches.
