This month’s Public Policy Roundup highlights three bills moving through the State Legislature: one that seeks to address the effects of capping the state and local tax deduction for federal taxes; one dealing with homelessness; and one expanding pay-for-success in an effort to reduce recidivism. As uncertainty looms over the future of immigration and the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program at the federal level, we summarize the California Budget and Policy Center’s analysis of the economic impact tied to DACA recipients, also known as Dreamers. We also take a look a recent report by the California Legislative Analyst’s Office recommending to modify food and income benefits for some of California’s more vulnerable, and we examine the California Poverty Measure, which correlates the high costs of housing with higher poverty levels.
