Women in the Innovation Ecosystem: A Workshop on Women and Entrepreneurship

June 18, 2019
9:00 am - 5:00 pm

University of California, Irvine
Beckman Center

100 Academy Way,
Irvine, CA 92617

The Committee on Women in Science, Engineering, and Medicine (CWSEM) of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine is partnering with the National Academies Presidents’ Initiative on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Science Policy to explore the intersection of diversity and inclusion in the current innovation ecosystem in the United States. Since entrepreneurship is a crucial enterprise responsible for driving innovation, generating jobs, and launching careers in the scientific sector, policies that promote equity and inclusion are vital to successfully recruiting and retaining women of all races, ethnicities, and sexual or gender orientations.

This scoping workshop will convene a group of experts, with both lived experience and scholarly research perspectives, to discuss the current state of entrepreneurial diversity, the gender investment gap, the challenges women face in navigating the innovation ecosystem, and promising practices for supporting women in their entrepreneurial pursuits. It is our hope that this project will be the starting point for future discussions that CWSEM can lead on this topic.

Featured speakers:

  • Yoky Matsuoka, Vice President at Google Health

  • Katie Rae, CEO and Managing General Partner, The Engine
