May Public Policy Roundup

Publication date:
05/24/2018

This month’s Public Policy Roundup comes days after our trip to the State Capitol for Philanthropy in Sacramento Day. Philanthropy California, our alliance with Northern California and San Diego Grantmakers, convened over 20 funders from across the state to educate policymakers about the 2020 Census, advance philanthropic goals by building relationships with legislators, and identify areas of strategic collaboration across sectors. Our visits were timed as the Legislature worked to iron out differences between Senate and Assembly versions of the budget.

April Public Policy Roundup

Publication date:
04/19/2018

Last month, Philanthropy California, an alliance of Southern California, Northern California and San Diego Grantmakers, ventured to Washington, D.C. for two days of insightful meetings with policymakers as a part of the United Philanthropy Forum’s Foundations on the Hill (FOTH). Our visits were well-timed with Congressional deliberation over a spending measure that would fund the federal government for the remainder of the fiscal year. Southern California Grantmakers brought a delegation to discuss our perspectives on the 2020 Census, the Johnson Amendment and other issues of concern to our members, including the unresolved future of Dreamers. Highlights of our visit include:

March Public Policy Round Up

Publication date:
03/15/2018

Good morning from Washington, DC! Our Public Policy Roundup is coming from Capitol Hill, where as Philanthropy California, an alliance of Northern California, Southern California and San Diego Grantmakers, we spent two days meeting with more than thirty members of Congress on a variety of issues. We urged Congressional members to reject efforts to repeal the Johnson Amendment, which has long preserved the nonpartisan role of foundations and nonprofits in civil society. We also educated lawmakers on the importance of the 2020 Census and of fully funding Census preparation efforts for a full, fair and accurate count. We will have more updates on our Hill visits when we return from Washington.

Last week, Congress reached an agreement on a federal spending plan that would lift spending caps on defense and non-defense spending, put off a raising of the debt ceiling to March 2019 (after this year’s November elections), put the annual deficit over $1.2 trillion and push the nation’s debt over $20 trillion. The following chart summarizes some of the major spending provisions in the agreement.
